Subject: Time off for interviews during notice - [Your name]

Hi [Name], I have been invited to an interview on [date] at [time], which is expected to take about [duration] including travel. I would like to ask for [paid / unpaid / annual leave / flexible hours] for this. I will make sure my work is covered by [handover arrangements] and will keep my phone on for urgent matters. I would give as much notice as possible of any further interviews. Please let me know if this works. Thanks, [Your name]

Tips

  • NZ law does not give a general right to paid time off to look for work, although your employment agreement or redundancy policy might. Check it. Many employers agree because it is reasonable.
  • Offer flexibility: early or late starts, working from home, annual leave, or making up the hours.
  • Do not say which company you are interviewing with if you do not want to.
  • Ask in writing so there is no later argument about whether you were absent without permission.
  • If you are refused and it is in your agreement or policy, raise it with HR; otherwise use annual leave.
