Subject: Your offer - [Job title]
Hi [Name], Thank you for offering me the [job title] role and for the time you and the team spent with me. After careful thought I've decided not to accept, because [short, honest reason: I accepted a role that fits my situation better / the hours don't suit my family / the offer isn't a match for my skills]. I was impressed by [specific], and I hope our paths cross again. Please keep me in mind for future roles. Kind regards, [Your name]
Tips
- Decline quickly and in writing, but don't burn bridges. NZ industries are small.
- If you are on a benefit, check whether declining a suitable job offer without a good reason could affect your payment. Work and Income can explain what 'suitable' means. Keep a note of your reasons (hours, travel, health, caring, pay).
- A short, honest reason is fine; you don't need to justify at length.
- If you want to negotiate rather than decline, use the salary negotiation template.
