Tips

  • Ask for 'everything you could be entitled to' - Work and Income staff are expected to look at your whole situation, not just the payment you name.
  • You can ask via MyMSD, by phone (0800 559 009) or at a service centre. If it is truly an emergency, say it is an emergency and explain what happens if it is not paid (e.g. disconnection, eviction).
  • Food grants and some urgent costs can be requested the same day. Grants are generally paid directly to the provider (landlord, power company).
  • Take your bills, bank statements and ID. Taking quotes or invoices helps.
  • If refused, ask 'what information would change this decision?' and request a review (see the review template).
  • Ask for the decision in writing, with reasons.
  • You can bring a support person or advocate (CAB, Community Law, a budgeting service, a union).
