Ask for a reference and a statement of service

Redundancy and your employer

Use it when

You are leaving (redundancy or otherwise) and want a written reference, and a simple factual record of your service to give to Work and Income, landlords or the next employer.

Fill in the [brackets]

Subject: Reference and statement of service - [Your name]

Hi [Name], As my last day is [date], could I please ask for: 1. A statement of service confirming my job title, start and end dates, and that my role ended due to redundancy (the disestablishment of the position). 2. A written reference. If it helps, I would be happy to provide a draft covering [key achievements: projects, systems, results, customer feedback]. I would also welcome your agreement to act as a referee. It would help to have these by [date], before I finish. Thank you for everything over the past [X years]. I have valued working with you. Kind regards, [Your name]

Tips

  • A statement of service can be requested from your employer. Many reference requests ask for exact dates and your job title, so having this in writing saves everyone time.
  • The stated reason should be 'redundancy' (position disestablished), which protects you from questions about performance.
  • Ask your manager now, while you are still on good terms, and also ask 2-3 colleagues for a LinkedIn recommendation.
  • Put in writing a short draft of what you want it to say. Most managers are grateful and will edit and sign.
  • Include the reference in any settlement agreement if there is one.
