Ask to change your notice period or leave early

Redundancy and your employer

Use it when

You have a new job to start, or you would rather be paid out than work your notice (or the other way around).

Fill in the [brackets]

Subject: Notice period - [Your name]

Hi [Name], I have been offered a position starting on [date]. As my notice period runs until [date], I would like to ask whether we can agree to an earlier finish on [date]. I propose that [I'll complete a full handover by [date] / my redundancy compensation and entitlements stay as they are / the remaining notice be treated as paid in lieu]. I would like to keep my redundancy compensation of $[amount] and my other entitlements unchanged. Please confirm in writing if you agree. Kind regards, [Your name]

Tips

  • Notice is what your employment agreement says (or a reasonable period if it says nothing). Changing it needs agreement from both of you.
  • Ask first and get the agreement in writing before you stop working. Leaving early without agreement may put your redundancy pay at risk.
  • Check if leaving early changes compensation, and if so, whether you want to negotiate for a share of the saved pay.
  • If you want to stay on to the end of notice, you generally still receive pay, KiwiSaver and leave accrual until the last day.
  • Check what the early finish does to your Work and Income start date and stand-down.
