Subject: [Job title] at [Company] - could you pass on my CV?

Hi [Name], I saw that [Company] is hiring a [job title] ([link]). I think it's a strong fit because [two specific reasons, e.g. 5 years running similar programmes; I have the same certification]. Would you be comfortable passing my CV to the hiring manager or recommending me? I know this is a favour, so no pressure at all if it isn't a good time or fit. To make it easier I've attached my CV and a 3-line summary you can paste: "[Name] is a [role] who [achievement 1] and [achievement 2]. I worked with them at [place] and they were [strength]. I think they'd be a great fit for [job]." I'm also glad to hear any tips about the team or the process. I'll apply through the website too so it's on the record. Thank you so much, [Your name]

Tips

  • Apply through the official channel as well as getting the referral. Many employers require this.
  • Only ask people who know your work well enough to say something specific.
  • Give them a paste-ready blurb. It makes you easier to refer.
  • Thank them whether or not it leads anywhere, and tell them the outcome.
  • Referrals often move an application to the top of the pile.
