Explain your redundancy in an interview

Job search

Use it when

You get asked 'Why did you leave your last job?' or 'Tell me about your last role.'

Fill in the [brackets]

THE FORMULA: Fact (1 sentence) + What I'm proud of (1-2) + What I want now (1). SCRIPT "My role was disestablished when [Company] [restructured / closed its X division / moved the work offshore]. [Number] roles were affected, including mine. In the [X years] I was there I [achievement 1] and [achievement 2], and I'm proud of that. I'm now looking for a role where I can [what you want, linked to the job you're interviewing for], and that's why I was so interested in this position." IF ASKED "WERE YOU PERFORMING WELL?" "Yes. My last review was [positive], and I can put you in touch with [referee] who can speak to that." IF ASKED "WHY YOU AND NOT SOMEONE ELSE?" "The decision was about the structure, not individuals. [Roles in my team were reduced from X to Y.] I'm happy for you to talk to my manager." IF ASKED ABOUT BAD FEELINGS "It was disappointing, but I've got a lot out of [the experience]. I left on good terms and I've stayed in touch with the team."

Tips

  • Practise out loud until it takes under 30 seconds. Then stop talking. Don't over-explain.
  • Never criticise your old employer. Stay neutral and positive.
  • Redundancy is a business decision. If you have a statement of service or a reference, mention that you have it.
  • If the redundancy was part of a big announcement (closure, mass layoffs), refer to the public information.
  • Move quickly to what you've done since and what you can bring to the new job.
