Retraining and job hunting after 50 in New Zealand

6 minute readRetraining

In short

Age discrimination in hiring is against the Human Rights Act 1993. Ageism still happens, so plan for it: show recent learning, target employers who value experience, and use short, targeted retraining rather than a long degree. If you're 55 or over, a Student Loan only covers course fees, not living costs.

Your rights

  • The Human Rights Act 1993 prohibits age discrimination in employment, including recruitment, pay, conditions, training and promotion, for people aged 16 and over.
  • Employers shouldn't ask your age or date of birth in interview unless it's a genuine requirement of the job.
  • If you think you were discriminated against, you can complain to the Human Rights Commission. The Commission offers a free dispute resolution service.

Working out how to live while you study is the hard part. Part-time study while on Jobseeker Support, or while working part-time, is often the most workable option. If you're close to NZ Super eligibility, ask Work and Income about your options before you decide.

What tends to work

  • Short, specific courses that fill a gap (software tool, health and safety, a trade ticket) rather than a 3-year degree.
  • Roles where experience is valued: training, supervision, compliance, customer-facing work, health and safety, care of older people, mentoring, small-business support.
  • Contracting or part-time work to bridge to retirement. See the self-employment guides first.
  • Networking: most roles are filled through contacts. Reconnect with ex-colleagues and suppliers.

Look after yourself

Losing a long-held job in your 50s is a big hit to identity. If you're struggling, call or text 1737 any time, or Lifeline 0800 543 354. See the wellbeing guide.
